Reading Time Calculator

This free reading time calculator tells you how long any text takes to read. Paste your text below and it counts the words instantly, then shows the reading time at slow, average, and fast speeds, the speaking time if you read it aloud, and how long a whole book would take at your pace. Pick a speed preset or type your own words-per-minute rate — the results update as you type.

Change the number above to use your own measured speed — the preset buttons set it for you.

How it works

Reading time is one simple division: the number of words divided by your reading speed in words per minute. If a text has 1,000 words and you read at 200 words per minute, it takes 1,000 divided by 200, which is 5 minutes. At 150 words per minute the same text takes 6 minutes 40 seconds, and at 250 words per minute it takes 4 minutes. This calculator does that division for you at three speeds at once, so you can see the range instead of a single number — because nobody reads at exactly the same speed all day.

The word count is the first step, and it works the way most word counters do: the calculator splits your text on spaces, line breaks, and tabs, and counts each group as one word. Hyphenated words count as one word when there is no space around the hyphen, numbers like 2026 count as one word each, and extra blank space is ignored, so pasting from a document with double spaces will not inflate the count. Alongside words, the calculator counts characters and sentences, which helps writers check length limits and readers judge how heavy a text is — a 1,000-word text with 40 short sentences reads much faster than a 1,000-word text with 10 long ones.

Your reading speed is the second step, and the three presets cover the usual range. Slow reading at 150 words per minute is how most people read dense, technical, or unfamiliar material, where every sentence needs a second thought. Average reading at 200 words per minute is the standard rate for ordinary articles, emails, and novels read for pleasure — it is the default here because it fits most readers most of the time. Fast reading at 250 words per minute suits light fiction and familiar topics, where the reader can skim the easy parts. If you know your own speed, type it in the custom box: read a 500-word passage, time yourself, and divide 500 by the minutes it took. A reader who finishes 500 words in 2 minutes reads at 250 words per minute.

Speaking time is shown separately because reading aloud is slower than reading silently. A speaker has to pronounce every word, pause for breath, and give the audience time to follow, so most speakers manage about 130 to 150 words per minute. This calculator uses 150 words per minute for speaking time. That matters for speeches, presentations, and video scripts: a 1,000-word speech takes about 7 minutes to deliver, even though it takes only 5 minutes to read silently. If your talk has a 10-minute slot, you need roughly 1,300 to 1,500 words — and a script that reads in 10 minutes silently will run long on stage.

The book estimate answers a different question: how long will this whole book take me? Enter the number of pages and the average words per page — most printed books average about 250 words per page, while large-print and children's books have fewer — and the calculator multiplies pages by words per page to get the total words, then divides by your speed. A 300-page book at 250 words per page is 75,000 words, which is 6 hours 15 minutes at 200 words per minute, or about 25 minutes a day for two weeks. That turns a thick book into a daily habit you can actually plan around.

Worked example

A student has an article of exactly 1,000 words and wants to know how long it will take to read, and how long a 300-page book would take at the same pace.

Step 1: Paste the 1,000-word article into the text box.
Step 2: Leave the speed on Average · 200 wpm.
Step 3: Leave the book fields on 300 pages and 250 words per page.

The calculator counts 1,000 words and shows a reading time of 5 minutes at 200 words per minute — 1,000 divided by 200 equals 5. At the slow speed of 150 words per minute the same article takes 6 minutes 40 seconds, and at the fast speed of 250 words per minute it takes 4 minutes. The speaking time is 6 minutes 40 seconds, because speaking runs at 150 words per minute. For the book, 300 pages times 250 words per page is 75,000 words, and 75,000 divided by 200 is 375 minutes, which is 6 hours 15 minutes — about 25 minutes a day for 15 days.

FAQ

What is the average reading speed?

Most adults read about 200 to 250 words per minute when reading for understanding. Slow, careful reading runs around 150 words per minute, and fast readers can reach 300 words per minute or more. This calculator defaults to 200 words per minute, which is a realistic average for ordinary reading.

How accurate is the reading time?

The time is an estimate based on your word count divided by your reading speed. Dense or technical text takes longer than light fiction, and your real speed changes with the material. Use the result for planning — how long a chapter will take, or whether a speech fits its slot — not as an exact stopwatch reading.

What counts as a word in the word count?

A word is any group of letters, numbers, or symbols separated by spaces, line breaks, or tabs. Hyphenated words count as one word when they have no space around the hyphen. Numbers like 2026 count as one word each, and the calculator ignores extra blank space.

How is speaking time different from reading time?

Speaking is slower than silent reading, because you have to pronounce every word, pause for breath, and let the audience follow. Most speakers manage about 130 to 150 words per minute, so a 1,000-word speech takes about 7 minutes to deliver but only about 5 minutes to read silently.

How does the book finish time work?

Enter the number of pages and the average words per page — most printed books have about 250 words per page — and the calculator multiplies them to get the total words, then divides by your reading speed. A 300-page book at 250 words per page is 75,000 words, which takes 6 hours 15 minutes at 200 words per minute.
