How it works

The sentence counter reads the text in the box and applies four simple rules. First, it finds sentences by splitting the text at every period, exclamation point, and question mark, then it throws away any empty pieces that are left over. A piece only counts as a sentence if it contains at least one letter or number, so a run of punctuation on its own never inflates the total.

Second, it counts words by splitting the text at spaces and line breaks. Every group of characters separated by white space counts as one word, which matches how most word processors count. Third, it counts characters twice: once with every space included, and once with spaces removed, so you can use whichever number your assignment or platform asks for.

Fourth, it counts paragraphs by splitting the text at blank lines. Each block of lines separated by an empty line is one paragraph. If your text has no blank lines at all, it is one paragraph, no matter how many sentences it holds.

Sentences = pieces of text ending in . ! or ?  ·  Words = groups separated by spaces  ·  Paragraphs = blocks separated by blank lines

Because the counting happens in your browser, the result appears the moment you type or paste. There is no waiting for a server, and there is no limit on how much text you can check in one go. If you paste a long essay, the tool still answers in a fraction of a second.

Worked example

Suppose you paste this short message into the tool:

“The new coffee shop on Main Street opens at seven in the morning. It serves fresh pastries every day! Do you want to meet there tomorrow?”

Step 1: split at the sentence marks. The text breaks into three pieces: one ending in a period after “morning”, one ending in an exclamation point after “day”, and one ending in a question mark after “tomorrow”. That gives 3 sentences.

Step 2: count the words. Counting each word in order gives 26 words in total: 13 in the first sentence, 6 in the second, and 7 in the third.

Step 3: count the characters. The whole message is 137 characters including spaces and 112 characters without spaces. There are no blank lines, so it is 1 paragraph, and the average sentence length is 26 ÷ 3 = 8.7 words per sentence.

Try the same text in the tool above and you will see exactly those numbers. The default text in the box is an even shorter check: “Hello world. This is a test!” gives 2 sentences, 6 words, 28 characters, and 1 paragraph.

When to use a sentence counter

Students use a sentence counter to check that an essay meets a length requirement and that no paragraph has grown into a wall of text. A paragraph with eight or ten sentences is usually hard to read, and splitting it in two makes the argument easier to follow.

Writers and marketers use it to keep sentences short and punchy. Short sentences are easier to scan on a phone, which is where most Americans now read email and social media. If your average sentence is over 20 words, try breaking the longest ones in half and count again.

Teachers and editors use the character counts for platforms with strict limits. A college application essay, a product description, or a social media bio often has a hard character cap, and the with-spaces and without-spaces totals let you check both versions of the rule at once.

FAQ

How does the sentence counter count sentences?

It splits your text at every period, exclamation point, or question mark. Each chunk of text that contains letters or numbers before one of those marks counts as one sentence. Empty chunks are ignored.

Does the character count include spaces?

The tool shows both numbers: characters including spaces and characters without spaces. The count with spaces matches what most word processors report, while the count without spaces is useful for jobs that charge by the character.

What counts as a paragraph?

A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next block by a blank line. If you paste a single block with no blank lines, the tool reports one paragraph, even if it contains many sentences.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. The counting runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device, so you can safely count drafts, school essays, and work documents.

Why does an abbreviation like a.m. add an extra sentence?

Because the counter treats every period as the end of a sentence, abbreviations with periods such as a.m., Dr., or U.S.A. can each add a false sentence. For the most accurate count, expand abbreviations or check the sentence total by eye before submitting a document with a strict limit.
