Upside Down Text Generator
Our free upside down text generator flips your words upside down using special Unicode characters. Type anything, watch it flip live, then copy the result and paste it into a chat, a comment, or a social media post for a fun surprise.
The flipped text updates live as you type.
Try an example:
Flip it back: paste flipped text into the box above and it flips most letters back to normal, because each flipped letter maps back to its original. A few letters, like capital K, come back lowercase — that is normal for upside-down text.
How it works
Upside-down text is not a font or an image — it is plain text made from Unicode characters that happen to look like upside-down letters. The letter a becomes ɐ, e becomes ǝ, h becomes ɥ, m becomes ɰ, and so on. Because these are real text characters, you can copy the result and paste it anywhere text works: chats, comments, bios, and posts.
The flip works in two steps. First, every letter is swapped for its upside-down twin using a character map. Then the whole string is reversed, because a word turned upside down reads in the opposite order — the same way a physical sign reads backwards when you flip it over. Type “Hello World” and the generator gives you “plɹoM ollǝH”, which looks upside down when you tilt your head or rotate your phone.
Not every character has a perfect upside-down twin. Letters like l, o, s, x, and z look the same upside down, so they stay as they are. Numbers mostly flip too: 6 becomes 9, 9 becomes 6, 2 becomes Ƨ, and 3 becomes Ɛ. Punctuation flips as well, so an exclamation mark becomes ¡ and a question mark becomes ¿, just like in Spanish.
The flipped text updates live as you type, and the Copy button grabs the whole result in one tap. Use it for playful messages, funny usernames, party invitations, or a surprise reply to a friend. If the flipped text shows up as boxes on an old device, that device is missing the Unicode characters — modern phones, browsers, and apps show them fine.
Worked example
Jordan wants to send a friend a playful birthday message and types Happy Birthday into the box.
The generator flips it live to ʎɐpɥʇɹᴉᗺ ʎddɐH. Jordan taps Copy Flipped Text, pastes it into a chat message, and sends it.
The friend turns the phone upside down to read it, laughs, and replies with flipped text of their own. Jordan can also flip it back: pasting the flipped text into the box again restores most letters to normal, because each upside-down character maps back to its original letter.
FAQ
How does upside down text work?
It uses Unicode characters that look like upside-down letters: a becomes ɐ, e becomes ǝ, and h becomes ɥ. The generator swaps each letter for its flipped twin and reverses the whole string, because flipped text reads in the opposite order. The result is plain text, not an image.
Can I paste upside down text anywhere?
Yes, almost anywhere text works: chats, comments, social media posts, bios, and usernames. It is made of real Unicode characters, so it copies and pastes like normal text. Very old devices may show some characters as boxes if they lack the fonts.
Why do some letters stay the same when flipped?
Some letters look identical upside down, so they have no separate flipped version. The letters l, o, s, x, and z are the same either way, and so are the numbers 0 and 8. The generator leaves those characters unchanged, which is correct.
How do I flip the text back to normal?
Paste the flipped text back into the box above. Each upside-down character maps back to its original letter, so most of the text returns to normal. A few letters, like capital K, come back lowercase, because uppercase and lowercase K share the same flipped character.
Does upside down text work in usernames?
It often works, but some apps and games only allow plain letters and numbers in usernames and will reject flipped characters. If a username field rejects it, try using the flipped text in your display name, bio, or posts instead.
