ISBN Barcode Generator

This free ISBN barcode generator turns any ISBN into a real, scannable EAN-13 barcode. Type the ISBN with or without hyphens, and the tool checks the check digit, shows the calculation step by step, and draws the barcode on a canvas — the bars encode your digits using the true EAN-13 patterns, not a random pattern. It also converts ISBN-10 numbers to ISBN-13, and lets you download the finished barcode as a PNG for printing.

Enter a 13-digit ISBN, or a 10-digit ISBN to convert it to ISBN-13 first.

How it works

An ISBN is the number that identifies a book, and the barcode on the back cover is the picture of that number that a scanner can read. Since 2007, new books use a 13-digit ISBN, and its barcode is an EAN-13 barcode: 13 digits encoded as a row of black bars and white gaps. This tool draws a true EAN-13 barcode. It does not draw random bars — it builds the pattern from the official encoding tables, so a scanner reads back exactly the ISBN you typed.

The EAN-13 pattern has 95 modules, where one module is the narrowest bar or gap. It starts with a left guard pattern of bar-space-bar (101), then six left-hand digits, a middle guard (01010), six right-hand digits, and a right guard (101). Each digit is 7 modules wide. Right-hand digits always use the same pattern, called the R set. Left-hand digits use two different patterns, the L set and the G set, and which one each digit uses depends on the very first digit of the ISBN. That first digit is not drawn as bars itself — it is encoded in the choice of L and G patterns across the six left digits. The check-digit table below the barcode shows you the full calculation, so you can see the weighted sum and the expected check digit for your ISBN.

The last digit of an ISBN-13 is the check digit, and it exists to catch typing mistakes. To work it out, take the first 12 digits and multiply them by 1, 3, 1, 3, and so on, alternating. Add the results together. The check digit is the number that brings that total up to the next multiple of 10 — or 0 if the total is already a multiple of 10. If the digit you typed does not match the calculated one, the tool tells you what it expected and refuses to draw a barcode for a wrong number, because a barcode for a mistyped ISBN would scan as the wrong book. A single wrong digit is almost always the cause, so check the number against the book itself.

Older books have a 10-digit ISBN instead. This tool converts those too: it takes the first 9 digits of the ISBN-10, puts 978 in front (the prefix for bookland), and works out the new ISBN-13 check digit. The converted ISBN-13 identifies the same book, and the barcode it draws is the one that belongs on a modern reprint. The height and bar-width controls change the size of the drawn barcode without changing the pattern, and the PNG download saves the exact canvas you see, with a white quiet zone on each side so scanners can find the edges.

Worked example

A self-published author has the ISBN 978-0-13-468599-1 for her book and needs a barcode for the back cover.

Step 1: Type 978-0-13-468599-1 in the ISBN field (hyphens are fine — the tool strips them).
Step 2: Leave the height on Standard and the scale on Standard, and press Generate Barcode.

The tool strips the hyphens to get 9780134685991 and checks the last digit. The first 12 digits, weighted 1, 3, 1, 3, and so on, give 9 + 21 + 8 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 18 + 8 + 15 + 9 + 27 = 129. The next multiple of 10 above 129 is 130, so the expected check digit is 130 − 129 = 1 — which matches the typed final digit, 1. The barcode is drawn: 95 modules, starting with the guard pattern 101, and the first left digit (7) uses its L pattern 0111011. The download is a 345 × 120 PNG at the standard scale (95 modules × 3 pixels wide, plus quiet zones), with the ISBN printed underneath.

FAQ

What is the difference between an ISBN and a barcode?

An ISBN is the number that identifies a book, and the barcode is the picture of that number that a scanner can read. For a 13-digit ISBN, the barcode is an EAN-13 barcode, and the bars encode exactly the same 13 digits. This tool takes the ISBN number and draws the matching EAN-13 barcode.

Can I use an ISBN-10 with this generator?

Yes. Type the 10-digit ISBN and the tool converts it to the matching 13-digit ISBN by adding the 978 prefix and working out the new check digit, then draws the barcode for the ISBN-13. The original ISBN-10 and the converted ISBN-13 identify the same book.

What is the ISBN check digit?

The check digit is the last digit of an ISBN, and it is calculated from the other digits so that typing mistakes can be caught. For ISBN-13, the first 12 digits are weighted 1, 3, 1, 3, and so on, the weighted values are added up, and the check digit is the number that brings the total up to a multiple of 10. If the digit you type does not match the calculated one, the ISBN is wrong.

Why does my ISBN say the check digit is wrong?

Almost always because of a typo in one of the other digits. A single wrong digit changes the calculated check digit, so the tool reports a mismatch and shows the digit it expected. Check the number against the book itself — the ISBN printed above the barcode on the back cover — and fix the mistyped digit.

Can I print this barcode and use it on a book?

The barcode this tool draws encodes the ISBN correctly, so a scanner will read it as your ISBN. For a book that will be sold in stores, the barcode must be printed at the right size, with a clear quiet zone of white space on each side, and the printed ISBN number under it. Always test the printed barcode with a real scanner before a full print run.
