How it works

Weeks and years measure the same thing — time — but they are used for very different plans. Weeks are the natural unit for projects, training programs, school terms, and work contracts, while years are how we talk about loans, subscriptions, careers, and age. Converting between them by hand is awkward because a year is not a whole number of weeks, and that leftover day is exactly where mistakes creep in.

Years = weeks ÷ 52.1429  |  Weeks = years × 52.1429

This converter treats one year as 52.1429 weeks. That comes from 365 days divided by 7 days per week: 365 ÷ 7 = 52.142857, rounded to 52.1429. In other words, a year holds 52 full weeks plus one extra day. A leap year has 366 days, so it holds 52.2857 weeks, but for general planning the 52.1429 figure is the standard one, and it is the figure this converter uses for every conversion in both directions.

Months are the trickiest unit on this page because months are not all the same length. February has 28 days, most months have 30 or 31, so there is no exact number of weeks in a month. The converter uses the average month: 365.25 days divided by 12 months gives 30.4375 days per month, which is about 4.3482 weeks. That average is what makes month conversions consistent — twelve average months add up to one average year — and it is the same figure used by calendars, payroll systems, and scheduling tools.

To convert any unit to any other, the converter first changes the value into weeks, then divides by the size of the target unit in weeks. For example, 30 days is 30 ÷ 7 = 4.2857 weeks, and 4.2857 weeks divided by 52.1429 weeks per year gives 0.0822 years. Going the other way, 2 years is 2 × 52.1429 = 104.2857 weeks, and multiplying by 7 gives 730 days. The same two steps work for seconds, minutes, and hours as well: one hour is 1 ÷ 168 weeks, and one minute is 1 ÷ 10,080 weeks.

That leftover day matters more than it looks. If you plan a two-year project as exactly 104 weeks, you are a couple of days short of two full years, because two years is 104.2857 weeks. Over a five-year loan or a long training plan, rounding a year down to 52 weeks loses five days. The converter keeps the 0.1429 so your totals stay honest, and it shows the result to four decimal places so you can see the difference instead of guessing.

People reach for this conversion in a few common situations. A contract that runs for 18 months is easier to picture as 1.5 years, and a 90-day trial is easier to picture as about 12.86 weeks. A fitness plan of 12 weeks is roughly a quarter of a year, and a baby's age in weeks turns into years and months for school and medical forms. Whatever the reason, enter the number, pick the two units, and the converter does the division — and the "All units" line underneath shows the same span in every unit at once, so you never have to convert twice.

Worked example

A training program lasts 104 weeks. How long is that in years?

Step 1: Write down the conversion — 1 year = 52.1429 weeks.
Step 2: Divide the weeks by weeks per year — 104 ÷ 52.1429 = 1.9945 years.
Step 3: Check it another way — 104 weeks is 104 × 7 = 728 days, and 728 ÷ 365 = 1.9945 years, which matches.

So 104 weeks equals 1.9945 years — just short of two full years, by about two days. The converter also shows the same span as 23.9176 months, 728 days, or 17,472 hours, all on the same "All units" line.

FAQ

How many weeks are in a year?

There are 52.1429 weeks in a year — 52 full weeks plus one extra day, since 365 divided by 7 is 52.1429. A leap year has 366 days, so it holds 52.2857 weeks. This converter uses 52.1429 weeks per year.

Why is a year not exactly 52 weeks?

Because 52 weeks is only 364 days, and a year has 365 days. That leftover day is why the count is 52.1429 instead of 52. If you round a year down to 52 weeks, you lose a day every year, which adds up to five days over five years.

How many weeks are in a month?

An average month is 4.3482 weeks, based on 30.4375 days per month (365.25 days divided by 12). Real months vary from 4 weeks plus a day to 4 weeks plus three days, so the average is the only figure that works for converting months to weeks in general.

How do I convert years to weeks?

Multiply the years by 52.1429. For example, 2 years is 2 × 52.1429 = 104.2857 weeks, and 5 years is 260.7145 weeks. Use the swap button on the converter to flip the direction and it does the multiplication for you.

Is a month exactly 4 weeks?

No. Four weeks is 28 days, and only February in a non-leap year is exactly 28 days. Every other month is 30 or 31 days, so a month is between 4.2857 and 4.4286 weeks. Treating a month as 4 weeks understates it by two or three days each month.
