Age Difference Calculator
Use this free age difference calculator to find the exact gap between two birth dates. Enter two dates of birth — or compare one birth date with today — and the calculator shows the difference in years, months, and days, the total months, weeks, and days between them, who is older, and each person's current age.
Age difference at a glance
| Gap | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 1 year | Born in the same school year in many places |
| 1–3 years | A small gap — common between siblings |
| 5 years | One person starts school as the other finishes the early years |
| 10 years | A full decade apart — different childhood eras |
| 20+ years | A generation apart |
How it works
An age difference is the time between two birth dates, measured on the real calendar. It sounds simple — subtract one date from the other — but calendar math has a twist: months are not all the same length, and February sometimes has 29 days. That is why this calculator works with years, months, and days separately instead of dividing the total days by 365, which would give a wrong answer whenever a leap year or a short month is involved.
The calculator starts by putting the earlier date first. It counts whole years from the earlier birthday to the most recent anniversary of that birthday, then whole months to the most recent monthly anniversary, then the remaining days. For example, from 15 January to 20 June the count is 5 years, 5 months, and 5 days, because 15 January plus 5 years is 15 January, plus 5 months is 15 June, plus 5 days is 20 June. When the day of the later date is smaller than the day of the earlier date, the calculator borrows days from the previous month, just like borrowing in subtraction.
Alongside the years, months, and days, the calculator also shows the gap as totals: total months, total weeks, and total days. Total months counts every full month in the gap, total weeks divides the total days by seven, and total days is the plain count of calendar days between the two dates, leap days included. These totals are handy when a form or a rule asks for the difference in a single unit — for example, an age gap of 65 months, or 1,982 days.
Leap years are handled automatically because the calculator uses real calendar dates. A person born on 29 February has a birthday only every four years, but their age still advances every year, and the gap between their birth date and any other date is counted day by day. The same care applies to months: the gap from 31 January to 1 March is 1 month and 1 day in a leap year, and 1 month and 1 day in a common year too, because February has 29 days in a leap year and the borrowing step counts the actual days in that February.
The calculator also tells you who is older and shows each person's current age. The person with the earlier birth date is older, and the current age is worked out from the birth date to today using the same years, months, and days method. If the two dates are the same, the calculator says the two people were born on the same day and the gap is zero — twins, or two people who simply share a birthday.
People use an age difference calculator for all sorts of reasons: parents comparing siblings, couples curious about their gap, teachers checking school cut-off dates, and anyone filling in a form that asks for an age gap in months. Whatever the reason, the result is only as good as the dates entered, so double-check the year first — a mistyped year is the most common mistake, and it changes everything.
Worked example
Person A was born on 15 January 1990 and Person B was born on 20 June 1995. How far apart are they?
Step 1: Put the earlier date first — 15 January 1990 is earlier than 20 June 1995, so Person A is older.
Step 2: Count whole years — 15 January 1990 plus 5 years is 15 January 1995.
Step 3: Count whole months — 15 January 1995 plus 5 months is 15 June 1995.
Step 4: Count the remaining days — 15 June 1995 plus 5 days is 20 June 1995.
The age difference is 5 years, 5 months, and 5 days. As totals, that is 65 full months, 283 weeks and 1 day, and 1,982 days. Person A is the older of the two by that amount.
FAQ
How is age difference calculated in years, months, and days?
The calculator counts whole years to the most recent birthday anniversary, then whole months to the most recent monthly anniversary, then the remaining days. When the later day is smaller than the earlier day, it borrows days from the previous month, so months of different lengths and leap years are handled correctly.
What is the total number of days between two birth dates?
It is the plain count of calendar days from the earlier date to the later date, including leap days. For example, 15 January 1990 to 20 June 1995 is 1,982 days. Divide by 7 to get total weeks, or count the full months for the total in months.
Can I compare one person's age to today?
Yes. Choose the 'One birth date vs today' option, enter the birth date, and the calculator compares it with today's date. It shows the person's exact age in years, months, and days, plus the total days they have been alive.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. It works with real calendar dates, so leap days are counted exactly. A person born on 29 February is handled correctly too — their age advances every year even though their birthday only appears every four years.
