How it works
Seconds and minutes are the two smallest units most people use to measure time, and they are linked by a single number: 60. There are 60 seconds in every minute, 60 minutes in every hour, and 3,600 seconds in every hour. Once you know that one number, every conversion between seconds, minutes, and hours is simple division or multiplication.
To turn seconds into minutes, divide by 60. To turn minutes into seconds, multiply by 60. To turn seconds into hours, divide by 3,600, and to turn minutes into hours, divide by 60. The converter above does the hours figure for you automatically, so a long value in seconds becomes easy to picture: 5,400 seconds is 90 minutes, which is 1.5 hours.
The tricky part is usually the decimal. A result of 2.5 minutes does not mean 2 minutes and 50 seconds — it means 2 minutes and 30 seconds, because 0.5 of a minute is half of 60 seconds. Likewise, 1.25 minutes is 1 minute and 15 seconds, and 0.75 minutes is 45 seconds. The converter shows the decimal result, and the worked example below shows how to read it as minutes and seconds.
People reach for this conversion in all sorts of everyday situations: timing a run or a workout interval, reading a song length or a video duration, working out how long a download or a render will take, converting a cooking timer, or turning a stopwatch reading into minutes for a timesheet. Timers and stopwatches usually count in seconds, while schedules and plans are usually written in minutes, so the two units need translating constantly.
One more thing worth knowing: the 60-based system comes from the ancient Babylonians, who counted in base 60, and it has survived for thousands of years because 60 divides neatly by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. That is why half a minute is exactly 30 seconds, a third of a minute is exactly 20 seconds, and a quarter of an hour is exactly 15 minutes — no messy fractions.
Worked example
Maria is timing her morning run. Her watch shows 150 seconds for the first stretch, and she wants to know how many minutes that is so she can compare it with her training plan, which is written in minutes.
Step 1: Write down the amount in seconds — 150 seconds.
Step 2: Use the conversion factor — 1 minute = 60 seconds.
Step 3: Divide: 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5.
Step 4: Read the result — 2.5 minutes, which is 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
The reverse direction works the same way. A 90-minute workout is 90 × 60 = 5,400 seconds, and in hours it is 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours. Those are the exact results this converter gives for 150 seconds and for 90 minutes, and they show why the hours figure helps: a big number of seconds becomes much easier to picture once it is shown as minutes and hours together.
