KB to MB Converter
Convert KB to MB with our free KB to MB converter — or flip it and turn MB back into KB. It also handles bytes, GB, TB, and petabytes, so you can size up any file, download, or storage plan in seconds, with no sign-up and no download.
Common amounts
| Size | Equals |

| 1,000 bytes | 1 KB |
| 1,000 KB | 1 MB |
| 2,048 KB | 2.048 MB |
| 1,000 MB | 1 GB |
| 500 MB | 0.5 GB |
| 1,000 GB | 1 TB |
| 1,000 TB | 1 PB |
| 250 GB | 0.25 TB |
How it works
Digital storage is measured in bytes, and the bigger units are just powers of a thousand stacked on top of each other. A kilobyte (KB) is 1,000 bytes, a megabyte (MB) is 1,000 KB, a gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 MB, a terabyte (TB) is 1,000 GB, and a petabyte (PB) is 1,000 TB. Each step up multiplies by 1,000, and each step down divides by 1,000. That is the decimal system, also called SI, and it is the system storage makers, internet providers, and phone makers use when they advertise sizes and speeds.
To convert KB to MB, divide by 1,000. To convert MB to KB, multiply by 1,000. To jump two steps, such as KB to GB, divide by 1,000,000. Pick the two units in the boxes above and the converter does the multiplication or division for you, in either direction.
There is one wrinkle you will run into sooner or later: the binary system, where each step multiplies by 1,024 instead of 1,000. Computers store data in binary, so some operating systems and older software measure a megabyte as 1,024 KB and a gigabyte as 1,024 MB. Strictly speaking, those binary units have their own names — kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB), gibibyte (GiB) — but in everyday use people still say KB and MB for both. This converter uses the decimal system (1,000), which matches how drives, data plans, and download sizes are sold.
That 1,000 versus 1,024 difference explains a classic confusion: a hard drive sold as 500 GB shows up as about 465 GB on a computer that counts in binary. Nothing is missing — the same bytes are just being counted in different-sized buckets. The gap grows with size: at the terabyte level it is close to 10 percent. If a number you see on your computer does not match the number on the box, this is almost always why.
Everyday uses include checking whether a file will fit in an email attachment limit (often 25 MB), working out how many photos fit on a memory card, comparing phone storage plans, estimating how much of a monthly data allowance a download will use, and turning a download size in GB into MB to compare it with your internet speed, which is usually quoted in megabits per second.
Worked example
Priya is about to email a folder of scanned documents. The folder is 2,048 KB, and her email provider limits attachments to 25 MB. She wants to know the folder size in MB.
Step 1: Write down the amount — 2,048 KB.
Step 2: Use the conversion factor — 1 MB = 1,000 KB.
Step 3: Divide: 2,048 ÷ 1,000 = 2.048.
Step 4: Read the result — 2.048 MB, well under the 25 MB limit.
Going the other way, 1 GB is 1 × 1,000 = 1,000 MB, so a 1 GB video is 1,000 MB and a 5 GB download is 5,000 MB. Those are the exact results this converter gives for 2,048 KB and for 1 GB. In the binary system the same 2,048 KB would be exactly 2 MiB, since 2,048 ÷ 1,024 = 2 — a handy reminder of which system a number came from.
FAQ
How many KB are in 1 MB?
In the decimal system this converter uses, 1 MB equals 1,000 KB. So 2,048 KB equals 2.048 MB. In the binary system used by some operating systems, 1 MB equals 1,024 KB instead.
How many MB are in 1 GB?
In the decimal system, 1 GB equals 1,000 MB. So a 5 GB file is 5,000 MB, and a 500 MB video is 0.5 GB.
Why does my computer show a different size than the box says?
Storage makers advertise in decimal units, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB, while many operating systems measure in binary units, where 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. A drive sold as 500 GB therefore shows up as about 465 GB on a computer that counts in binary.
How many bytes are in 1 KB?
In the decimal system this converter uses, 1 KB equals 1,000 bytes. The scale keeps going up by 1,000 each step: 1 MB is 1,000 KB, 1 GB is 1,000 MB, 1 TB is 1,000 GB, and 1 PB is 1,000 TB.
What is bigger, MB or GB?
A gigabyte is bigger than a megabyte. 1 GB equals 1,000 MB in the decimal system, so a file measured in GB is roughly a thousand times larger than the same number in MB.
