How it works

Land is measured in different units depending on who is describing it. Building plans and apartment listings use square meters or square feet, farms and land listings use acres and hectares, and maps use square kilometers and square miles. They all measure area — length times width — so any one of them converts into any other with a fixed number.

Acres = square meters ÷ 4,046.86  |  Square meters = acres × 4,046.86

The acre is the oldest unit on this page. It comes from the area a team of oxen could plow in one day, and it was later fixed as one chain (66 feet) by one furlong (660 feet), which multiplies out to 43,560 square feet. In metric terms that is 4,046.86 square meters. A square acre would be about 208.7 feet on each side — roughly 63.6 meters — which is a useful picture when you are standing on a lot and trying to judge its size.

The hectare is the metric answer to the acre: exactly 10,000 square meters, a square 100 meters on each side. Because 10,000 divided by 4,046.86 is 2.4711, one hectare equals 2.4711 acres, and one acre equals 0.4047 hectares. Land outside the United States is usually listed in hectares, while land in the United States is usually listed in acres, so this pair is the one converters get asked for most.

The smaller units matter for buildings and rooms. One square meter equals 10.7639 square feet, and one square foot equals 0.092903 square meters. One square yard is 9 square feet, or 0.836127 square meters. The large units are for maps and regions: one square kilometer is 1,000,000 square meters, one square mile is 2,589,988 square meters, and one square mile equals exactly 640 acres — a handy check, since 640 times 4,046.86 is 2,589,990, within rounding of the square-mile figure.

To convert any unit to any other, the converter first changes the value into square meters, then divides by the size of the target unit in square meters. For example, 5,000 square meters divided by 4,046.86 gives 1.2355 acres, and the same 5,000 square meters divided by 0.092903 gives 53,819.55 square feet. Going the other way, 3 acres is 3 times 4,046.86, which is 12,140.58 square meters. The same two steps work for every pair on this page, and the "All units" line shows the result in all seven units at once.

A sense of scale helps the numbers land. An American football field, including the end zones, covers about 5,350 square meters, or 1.32 acres — so an acre is roughly three quarters of a football field. A typical suburban house lot of a quarter acre is about 1,011.7 square meters. A 100-square-meter apartment is about 1,076.39 square feet, and a 10-hectare farm is about 24.71 acres. Keep the picture in mind and the conversions stop feeling abstract: an acre is a big garden, a hectare is a small field, and a square mile is a whole neighborhood.

Worked example

A plot of land measures 5,000 square meters. How many acres is that?

Step 1: Write down the conversion — 1 acre = 4,046.86 square meters.
Step 2: Divide the area by square meters per acre — 5,000 ÷ 4,046.86 = 1.2355 acres.
Step 3: Check it another way — 1.2355 × 4,046.86 = 4,999.99 square meters, which matches the 5,000 we started with.

So 5,000 square meters equals 1.2355 acres. The converter also shows the same plot as 0.5 hectares, 53,819.58 square feet, or 5,979.95 square yards, all on the same "All units" line.

FAQ

How many square meters are in an acre?

One acre equals 4,046.86 square meters. To convert acres to square meters, multiply by 4,046.86 — so 2 acres is 8,093.72 square meters, and 10 acres is 40,468.6 square meters. To go the other way, divide the square meters by 4,046.86.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

A hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters, while an acre is 4,046.86 square meters, so a hectare is bigger: one hectare equals 2.4711 acres, and one acre equals 0.4047 hectares. Hectares are the standard land unit in metric countries, and acres are the standard in the United States.

How big is an acre in real terms?

An acre is 43,560 square feet — a square about 208.7 feet on each side, or about 63.6 meters. For comparison, an American football field including the end zones is about 1.32 acres, so an acre is roughly three quarters of a football field.

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply the square meters by 10.7639. For example, 100 square meters is 1,076.39 square feet. To go the other way, multiply square feet by 0.092903, or divide by 10.7639. This converter handles both directions — just pick the two units.

How many acres are in a square mile?

There are exactly 640 acres in one square mile. A square mile is 2,589,988 square meters, and 2,589,988 divided by 4,046.86 is 640. So a 640-acre ranch is exactly one square mile, and a 160-acre quarter section is a quarter of a square mile.
