Km to Cm Converter

Convert kilometers to centimeters with our free km to cm converter — or flip it and turn centimeters back into kilometers. One kilometer equals 100,000 centimeters, so 1 km is 100,000 cm, and this page handles the math in either direction.

How it works

Kilometers and centimeters are both metric units of length, but they sit at opposite ends of the scale: kilometers measure roads, races, and trips, while centimeters measure heights, paper, and small objects. The bridge between them is the meter. One kilometer equals 1,000 meters, and one meter equals 100 centimeters, so one kilometer equals 1,000 × 100 = 100,000 centimeters. That single number — 100,000 — is the whole conversion.

To turn kilometers into centimeters, multiply by 100,000. To turn centimeters into kilometers, divide by 100,000. Because the metric system is built on powers of ten, you can also do it by moving the decimal point: five places to the right for kilometers to centimeters, five places to the left for the reverse. So 2 km becomes 200,000 cm, 0.5 km becomes 50,000 cm, and 250,000 cm becomes 2.5 km. The five zeros are the giveaway — "kilo" means a thousand and "centi" means a hundredth, and a thousand divided by a hundredth is a hundred thousand.

Kilometers to centimeters: cm = km × 100,000  |  Centimeters to kilometers: km = cm ÷ 100,000

This conversion comes up most often in school. Science and math classes ask students to switch between kilometers and centimeters when they work with maps, scale drawings, and unit practice, because the jump between the biggest and smallest everyday metric length units is a good test of whether the decimal system really clicks. A map scale is a classic example: if 1 cm on a map stands for 1 km on the ground, then that 1 cm stands for 100,000 cm of real distance, and the map's scale is written as 1:100,000.

Outside school, the conversion is a sense check for distances. A 5K race is 5 kilometers, which is 500,000 centimeters — a number so large that nobody would ever use it in conversation, which is exactly why kilometers exist. Centimeters are for things you can hold or stand next to; kilometers are for things you travel. Converting between them usually means checking homework, reading a map scale, or working out a scale model, where a real building of 0.05 km becomes 5,000 cm on paper.

The most common mistake is dropping a zero. Multiplying by 10,000 instead of 100,000 gives 10,000 cm for 1 km, which is ten times too small, while multiplying by 1,000,000 gives 1,000,000 cm, which is ten times too big. Counting the zeros out loud helps: one thousand meters, each one a hundred centimeters, is one hundred thousand centimeters. A quick sense check helps too: a kilometer is a long walk, about 12 minutes on foot, so its centimeter figure should be a big number with five zeros after the 1.

Worked example

Jordan is building a scale model of a road. The real road is 1 km long, and Jordan needs its length in centimeters to plan the model.

Step 1: Write down the distance — 1 km.
Step 2: Use the conversion factor — 1 km = 100,000 cm.
Step 3: Multiply: 1 × 100,000 = 100,000.
Step 4: Round if needed — 100,000 is already exact, so the answer is 100,000 cm.

The road is 100,000 cm long in real life. Going the other way: a distance of 250,000 cm is 250,000 ÷ 100,000 = 2.5 km.

FAQ

How many centimeters are in 1 km?

There are 100,000 centimeters in 1 kilometer. Multiply kilometers by 100,000: 1 km equals 100,000 cm.

How many kilometers is 250,000 cm?

250,000 cm equals 2.5 kilometers. Divide centimeters by 100,000: 250,000 ÷ 100,000 = 2.5 km.

Why is 1 km equal to 100,000 cm?

Because 1 km equals 1,000 meters and 1 meter equals 100 centimeters. Multiply the two steps: 1,000 × 100 = 100,000 cm per km.

How do I convert km to cm in my head?

Add five zeros to the kilometer figure, or move the decimal point five places to the right. 2 km becomes 200,000 cm and 0.5 km becomes 50,000 cm.
