How it works

A liter is a metric unit of volume, defined as exactly one cubic decimeter — a cube 10 centimeters on each side, holding 1,000 cubic centimeters. A cubic foot is an imperial unit: a cube one foot on each side. Because one foot is 30.48 centimeters, one cubic foot holds 30.48 × 30.48 × 30.48 = 28,316.8 cubic centimeters, which is 28.3168 liters. That single number is the key to the whole converter: divide liters by 28.3168, or multiply by 0.0353147, to get cubic feet.

Every other unit in the converter is tied to the liter in the same way. A milliliter is one thousandth of a liter. A cubic inch is 0.0163871 liters, and a cubic yard — 27 cubic feet — is 764.5549 liters. The kitchen and fuel units are defined against the liter too: one US gallon is 3.78541 liters, one US quart is a quarter of that at 0.946353 liters, and one US cup is a sixteenth of a gallon at 0.236588 liters. The converter changes your input into liters first, then divides by the target unit's liter value, so any pair of units converts through one consistent path.

cubic feet = liters × 0.0353147  ·  liters = cubic feet × 28.3168

Volume shows up in surprisingly different places. A moving box is sold by cubic feet, a fish tank by gallons or liters, a bag of concrete by cubic feet or cubic yards, and a recipe by cups or milliliters. The same 100 liters is 3.53 cubic feet, 26.42 US gallons, and about 422.7 US cups — three numbers for one amount of liquid, depending on who is measuring it. Keeping the conversion straight matters most when ordering materials: a cubic yard of soil is 764.55 liters, so a garden bed that needs two cubic yards needs more than fifteen hundred liters, not a few hundred.

Remember that the gallons, quarts, and cups here are the US customary versions. The older imperial gallon used in some countries is larger, about 4.546 liters, so a number in imperial gallons would come out about 20 percent higher. If a label does not say which gallon it means, check the country of origin before converting.

Worked example

A storage box holds 100 liters. How many cubic feet is that, and how many US gallons?

Step 1: Convert to cubic feet — 100 × 0.0353147 = 3.5315 ft³.
Step 2: Convert to US gallons — 100 ÷ 3.78541 = 26.4172 US gallons.
Step 3: Check the other way — 3.5315 × 28.3168 = 100 liters, so the round trip closes.

Try it in the converter: enter 100, choose liters on the left and cubic feet on the right, and you will see 3.5315 ft³, with gallons and the other units listed underneath.

FAQ

How many cubic feet are in 1 liter?

One liter equals 0.0353147 cubic feet. Multiply liters by 0.0353147 to get cubic feet, or divide cubic feet by 0.0353147 (multiply by 28.3168) to get liters.

How many liters are in 1 cubic foot?

One cubic foot equals 28.3168 liters. That is why a box of one cubic foot holds almost 28.3 one-liter bottles of water.

Is a liter the same as a cubic decimeter?

Yes. One liter is exactly one cubic decimeter (1,000 cubic centimeters). That exact definition is what makes the liter-to-cubic-feet factor 0.0353147.

How do I convert liters to US gallons?

Divide liters by 3.78541. For example, 10 liters is 2.6417 US gallons. This converter includes US gallons, quarts, and cups alongside the metric and cubic units.
