Receipt Generator

This free receipt generator builds a clean, paper-style receipt in seconds. Enter your business name, a receipt number, and the date, add up to 10 items with quantities and prices, then switch on tax and tip if you need them. The receipt preview updates live as you type, and the Print button prints just the receipt — or saves it as a PDF from the print dialog.

How it works

A receipt is a small record with a big job: it proves what was bought, for how much, and when. A good one answers four questions at a glance — who sold it, what was sold, what it cost, and how it was paid for. This generator builds exactly that, in the familiar shape of a paper receipt, and it updates live while you type so you can see the finished document before you print it.

Start with the header details. The business name prints at the top in bold, so a customer can tell at a glance where the purchase happened. The receipt number gives each receipt a unique reference — useful when a customer comes back with a question about one purchase. The date defaults to today and records when the sale happened. The currency menu sets the symbol shown on every price, so the same tool works whether you price in dollars, euros, pounds, rupees, or yen.

Then come the items. Each row has a name, a quantity, and a unit price, and the line total is quantity times price. Add rows with the Add Item button — up to 10 — and remove any row with the red × button. Three example rows are filled in to show the format; replace them with your own items. Quantities must be at least 1 and prices cannot be negative; if you type something the tool cannot use, it shows a friendly message and keeps the last good values instead of showing a broken total.

Tax and tip are optional switches. Turn on tax and enter your rate — 8.5% is the default, a common combined sales tax rate — and the tax is calculated on the subtotal. Turn on tip and enter a percentage — 15% is the default — and the tip is calculated on the subtotal too, which is how most receipts handle it. The math is simple and printed line by line: subtotal, then tax, then tip, then the grand total, so anyone can check the arithmetic. Finally, pick a payment method and add an optional footer message, such as "Thank you for your business!" or your return policy in one short line.

When the receipt looks right, press Print Receipt. Your browser's print dialog opens with only the receipt on the page — the rest of the site is hidden — and you can send it to a printer or choose "Save as PDF" to keep a digital copy. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored anywhere; the whole receipt lives in your browser, so print or save it before you close the page.

Worked example

Sunny Corner Cafe sells a customer two coffees and one sandwich. The coffees cost $4.50 each and the sandwich costs $8.75. The cafe charges 8.5% tax, and the customer leaves no tip.

Step 1: Enter Sunny Corner Cafe as the business name and RCPT-1042 as the receipt number.
Step 2: Enter two rows — Coffee, quantity 2 at $4.50, and Sandwich, quantity 1 at $8.75 (delete the third example row first).
Step 3: Leave the tax toggle on at 8.5% and the tip toggle off.
Step 4: Choose Cash as the payment method and press Print Receipt.

The math: subtotal is (2 × $4.50) + (1 × $8.75) = $9.00 + $8.75 = $17.75. Tax is 8.5% of $17.75 = $1.51. The total is $17.75 + $1.51 = $19.26. The receipt shows every line, so the customer can check the total in seconds.

FAQ

How many items can I add to a receipt?

Up to 10 items. Each row has a name, quantity, and price, and you can add or remove rows at any time. The subtotal, tax, tip, and total update live as you edit.

How do I print or save the receipt?

Press the Print Receipt button. It opens your browser print dialog, which prints only the receipt itself. Choose Save as PDF in the dialog if you want a PDF copy instead of paper.

Can I add tax and a tip to the receipt?

Yes. Turn on the tax toggle and enter your tax rate, and turn on the tip toggle and enter a tip percentage. Both are optional, and the totals recalculate instantly when you change them.

Is this receipt valid for tax or legal purposes?

No. This tool creates a simple formatted receipt for personal records, mockups, and small informal sales. For official invoices or tax records, use your accounting software or a registered invoice template.

Is my receipt data saved anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored. Close the page and the receipt is gone, so print it or save it as a PDF before you leave.
