MPH to m/s Converter
Convert MPH to m/s with our free MPH to m/s converter — or switch between any speed units: mph, meters per second, feet per second, km/h, and knots. One mile per hour equals 0.44704 meters per second, so 60 mph is 26.82 m/s.
Common speeds
| mph | m/s | km/h | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 mph | 4.47 m/s | 16.09 km/h | A fast cyclist |
| 30 mph | 13.41 m/s | 48.28 km/h | A city speed limit |
| 60 mph | 26.82 m/s | 96.56 km/h | Highway cruising speed |
| 70 mph | 31.29 m/s | 112.65 km/h | A fast highway limit |
| 100 mph | 44.70 m/s | 160.93 km/h | A race car on a straight |
How it works
Speed is distance over time, and every speed unit is just a different pair of distance and time units. Miles per hour uses miles and hours, meters per second uses meters and seconds, feet per second uses feet and seconds, kilometers per hour uses kilometers and hours, and knots use nautical miles per hour. Converting between them is a matter of swapping the distance unit and the time unit with exact factors — a mile is 1,609.344 meters, an hour is 3,600 seconds, and a foot is 0.3048 meters.
The conversion factors fall straight out of those definitions. One mile per hour is 1,609.344 meters divided by 3,600 seconds, which is 0.44704 meters per second. Multiply by 3.28084 to get feet per second (1.46667 ft/s), multiply by 1.60934 to get km/h, and multiply by 0.86898 to get knots. Because every factor is exact, you can convert in either direction with the same numbers: divide where you multiplied, and you land back where you started.
To convert mph to m/s, multiply by 0.44704. To go the other way, divide m/s by 0.44704 — or multiply by 2.23694, which is the same thing. For example, 60 × 0.44704 = 26.82 m/s, and 10 m/s × 2.23694 = 22.37 mph. For km/h, the factor is 1.60934: 100 km/h ÷ 1.60934 = 62.14 mph. A quick mental shortcut is that 1 m/s is about 2.24 mph, and 1 mph is a little under half a meter per second.
Meters per second shows up wherever science meets speed. Weather reports give wind in m/s in many countries, physics problems use m/s because it pairs cleanly with meters and seconds, and engineers use it for airflow, water flow, and projectile speeds. Feet per second is the unit of ballistics and American engineering — a baseball pitch at 90 mph is 132 ft/s, which explains why a batter has less than half a second to react. Knots belong to boats and planes. Whatever unit you start with, the converter above shows all five, so you can check your answer at a glance.
Worked example
Emma is reading a weather report that says the wind is blowing at 26.82 meters per second, and she wants to know what that means in miles per hour for her drive home.
Step 1: Write down the speed — 26.82 m/s.
Step 2: Use the conversion factor — 1 m/s = 2.23694 mph.
Step 3: Multiply: 26.82 × 2.23694 = 60.0.
Step 4: Read the answer — 60 mph.
That is the exact result this converter gives in reverse: 60 mph equals 26.82 m/s, so 26.82 m/s is 60 mph — a strong wind, close to gale force. The same math works for other pairs: 10 m/s is 22.37 mph, and 100 km/h is 62.14 mph, which you can check by picking those units in the converter above.
FAQ
How many m/s is 60 mph?
60 mph equals 26.82 m/s. Multiply 60 by 0.44704 to get 26.8224, which rounds to 26.82 m/s.
How do I convert m/s back to mph?
Divide m/s by 0.44704, or multiply by 2.23694. For example, 10 m/s × 2.23694 = 22.37 mph.
How fast is 100 km/h in mph?
100 km/h equals 62.14 mph. Divide 100 by 1.60934 to get 62.137, which rounds to 62.14 mph.
What is 1 mph in feet per second?
1 mph equals 1.46667 feet per second. So 60 mph is 88 feet per second, which is why stopping distances grow so fast with speed.
