WebP to GIF Converter

This free WebP to GIF converter turns your WebP images into GIFs right in your browser — and it accepts PNG images too. Pick a file, choose a quality level, and download the GIF. Your image never leaves your device, because the whole conversion happens locally. No uploads, no watermarks, and no sign-up.

Only .webp and .png files are accepted. Your image is processed locally — it is never uploaded anywhere.

Lower quality numbers mean better-looking GIFs and larger files. 10 is a good default.

How it works

WebP is a modern image format: it makes small, sharp files, which is why websites love it. The problem is that not every app accepts it. Older editors, some email clients, chat apps, and forum uploaders still only take GIF, JPG, or PNG — and a WebP file can be rejected outright. Converting to GIF solves that, because GIF has been supported everywhere for over thirty years. The picture stays the same; only the container changes.

This converter does the whole job in your browser. When you pick a file, the browser decodes the image and draws it onto a canvas, showing you its width, height, and file size. When you press Convert, that canvas is handed to the GIF encoder, which builds a real GIF file from the pixels and offers it as a download. Because nothing is uploaded, the conversion is instant for normal photos and graphics, and your image stays private.

The quality setting controls how carefully the encoder picks colors. A GIF can only hold 256 colors, so the encoder has to choose the best 256 to represent your image. Quality 5 spends more effort on that choice and produces the sharpest result, at the cost of a larger file and a slower conversion. Quality 10 is the balanced default and looks good for most photos and screenshots. Quality 20 works faster and makes smaller files, which suits simple graphics and icons. If your image has smooth gradients, such as a sky or a soft shadow, use quality 5 — gradients are where the 256-color limit shows most.

Two limits of GIF are worth knowing. First, GIF cannot show partial transparency: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully solid, so a PNG with soft, feathered edges will get a slightly hard edge in GIF form. Second, GIF is not the best format for photographs — it is excellent for logos, icons, screenshots, and simple graphics, but a detailed photo will look better as a JPG or PNG. If your photo comes out looking posterized, with flat bands of color instead of smooth shading, that is the 256-color limit at work, not a bug.

The output file keeps the same name as your input, with the extension changed to .gif, so a file called logo.webp becomes logo.gif. It opens in every image viewer, browser, and editor. One more note: this tool converts still images. An animated WebP will convert as a single still frame, because the GIF encoder here works from one canvas image — if you need the animation kept, use a dedicated animation converter instead.

Worked example

A designer downloads a logo from a website and gets logo.webp, but the client's old presentation software only accepts GIF files. The image is 800 by 600 pixels and 45 KB.

Step 1: Choose the file logo.webp in the file picker.
Step 2: The tool shows 800 × 600 pixels, WebP, 45 KB.
Step 3: Leave the quality on Balanced (10) and press Convert to GIF.

The encoder builds a real GIF from the image pixels, and the Download button saves it as logo.gif. The logo opens in the presentation software with no error, and the picture looks identical to the original.

FAQ

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is decoded and converted entirely in your browser using JavaScript running on your own device. Your image never leaves your computer, so private photos and client work stay private.

Why convert WebP to GIF at all?

WebP is newer and not every app accepts it. GIF has been supported everywhere for decades, so converting is the simplest fix when an uploader, editor, or old program rejects a WebP file.

Will the GIF look as good as the original?

For logos, icons, and simple graphics, yes. For photos with smooth gradients, a GIF can look slightly posterized because GIF only supports 256 colors. Choose the higher quality setting for the best result with photos.

Does it keep animation from an animated WebP?

No. This tool converts a single still frame. Animated WebP files will come out as one static GIF frame. Use a dedicated animation converter if you need the motion kept.
